Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) Driver
This is now changing—best I can tell though I am not a lawyer the Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) have recently expired, and implementations of the ADAT protocol are now showing up as IP blocks that can run on FPGAs and some microcontrollers.
The ALG takes an ADAT bitstream and decodes it into 4 channels of serial digital audio, with each data line containing interleaved data for two audio channels. I glue the headers down first with superglue, and add some 2-part epoxy later to really make sure Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) they stay put.
This provides a point from which signals on the board can be wired into an additional PCB that can be easily disconnected for servicing. The signals are then wired up using gauge wire-wrapping wire.

The various signals were located by referencing the datasheets for the converter chips and looking for continuity between the pins on the chip and easier places to solder to. The clock lines are shared between all of the converters on the board, so the clock signals just connect in Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) location and then run through the traces on the PCB to everything else.
I did cut off the part of the traces where they used to run to the FPGA to keep them from acting as big antennas. There are a couple of different formats for serial digital audio—they all use a system clock, bit clock, Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) word clock sometimes also called LR clock because its value toggles between the left and right channels and all will generally have 32 bits of data transmitted for each channel.
Right-justified formats are also sometimes used as well.
To account for all of these different formats, most chips that have a serial digital audio interface have a couple of pins that can Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) set high or low to configure which format should be used. This is true of both the converters in the Layla and the Wavefront chips.

This required lifting the configuration pins off of their pads on the PCB and running short wires to connect them to either power or ground. Wiring-wise, this was the most tedious part of the modification.
A pin through-hole connector on the back side of the board mates with the pin header epoxied to the original board. The ADAT transceivers connect via the 6-pin header on the top side of the board, which will be discussed later in this article. The tab is soldered to a Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) for an electrolytic capacitor that was unpopulated on the original board.

The Controller The original Layla came with software that allowed the user to adjust the input and output gains. To be able to control these signals, I added another pin header and PCB that controls these signals.
The 32U2 also has a USB interface, with which I provide a way for the settings to be changed from a computer. All of the digital control lines conveniently come out to resistor packs near where the FPGA used to be.
A number of audio cards are representing themselves as 24 bit audio, but if you take a good look at the audio specs they are only marginally better Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) 20 bit hardware. Also, I think that the breakout box with TRS balanced connectors is a nice feature.

Darla24 continues to have all the other things that are nifty about our cards, like the flexible monitor mixer and our new Windows multi-client audio drivers. These drivers let you use multiple applications simultaneously with the different outputs and inputs of our hardware. They may have cleaned this up on their new products, Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) I notice that they don't even list total harmonic distortion on their website for either current Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) new products.
I haven't used the CardDeluxe, but the specs look good. Obviously, the CardDeluxe just gives you 4 in and 4 out; Layla gives you 10 in and 12 out. The CardDeluxe seems like more of a competitor for Darla24 or Gina.

What is the next big leap for the PC-based audio recording industry that you see? If I had to guess, I would say that multiprocessor systems will become more popular, especially Echo Digital Audio Darla(20-bit) the upcoming release of Windows and professional audio applications for BeOS. Right now it looks like a standards war is being fought; should be interesting to see how that settles down.
